Memory Boosters
Yes, I am getting forgetful.
Forgetting to post because I forget what day it is.
Forgetting where I put the car keys even though I am holding them in my hand.
Some times forgetting the children are home and thinking I need to pick them up.
Or forgetting where I parked the car in the parking lot when at the store.
So here are some short exercises that can boost your memory. (However, there may be things you just wish to forget all together.)

10 Germ Hot Spots in Your Home
Since it is suppose to be around 50 degrees around here this weekend, I am going to spring clean and start to organize my yardsale (end of April or May).
This MSN article will help me get things clean and nearly germ free (got to have a few good germs around that eat the bad ones).
Every few days, I do go around the house with a few paper towels and the Lysol spray cleaner and wipe down door knobs and cabinet pulls, plus the refrigerator and freezer doors. I think this has help reduce our colds in the house.
I am going to have my children read it too, maybe they will keep their spaces cleaner? More likely, they will only "think" about what they read for now.

Toxic Dryer Sheets
Bonnie Hunt on her TV show mentioned how dryer sheets can be toxic to your health and to reconsider using them.
If you get a rash or welts, feel stuffy, watery eyes, sneezing just from wearing your clothing, you could have an environmental allergy to a household product. You will have to remove potential items from your life to find out what it is that is bothering you. Sometimes it could be what other people use also.
Soaps, shampoos, conditioners, perfumes, shaving cream etc, can all have the same allergic result.
Even dry cleaning can do this to you.
Getting back to the dryer sheets, use 1/4 cup of vinegar in your laundry for light fabrics (cottons) and 1/2 cup for heavier fabrics (jeans, bedspreads, etc) instead of fabric softeners. Vinegar is a natural product and less expensive.
As for the dryer sheets -- those spikey dryer balls work really well. I have found them to "fluff up" the towels a bit better than the stiffness dryer sheets tend to do to them due to the residue the dryer sheets leave.
Here is an article on fabric softener and dryer sheets with some alternatives ...

I even printed them out and gave each member of my family one -- since they lack the "clean up gene".

Woman Over 35 Dr. Christiane Northrop
This Oprah show aired on October 16th 2007. Dr. Christiane Northrop was the guest.
Oprah described how busy she was this summer and how she felt very tired and worn out.
She went in to be checked and they found her thyroid was "blown out". She got meds.
25% of perimenopausal/menopausal woman encounter thyroid problems and most do not know this. Ask your doctor for a blood test to determine if you suspect thyroid issues.
When your body feels like it is breaking down, it is a break through revelation that something is wrong, as stated, you are in labor with yourself.
If you have not been taking care of yourself but everyone else, your body is speaking to you to take notice and care of yourself. If you don't, then it shows up in your body functions, they don't work so well and you begin to develop other issues.
By the time a woman reaches 35-40, she can express who she is and possesses the skills to "reinvent herself".
Rachel, a mother of two and a 40 year old was suffering from insomnia, massive headaches, was angry most of the time, had backaches, had bouts of vertigo, experienced weight gain, had lots of resentment and envy, was stressed and tense all the time and lost passion and compassion.
It was discussed that Rachel was putting herself last and had hidden feelings of anger which is the jet fuel of feeling repressed and she had to get rid of it.
Moms should be the source of the joy of life which is a gift to their children.
Good blood circulation equals the circulation of joy.
Five Things Everyone Deserves
1. Eat a good breakfast (bars, shakes, proteins) to keep your sugar levels low for the day.
2. Cut out carbs as you get older.
3. Increase your intake of Omega 3s.
4. Eat less desserts, decrease sugar intake.
5. Put more calm in your life especially before bedtime: no computer, no TV (get TV out of the bedroom), no music.
If you are a coffee drinker and on pills or medications -- this can increase your weight.
The coffee intake needs to be adjusted.
Take a daily multi-vitamin.
Cut out eating in the evening, have a cut off time (6 pm). This will help you lose weight.
(I have also heard that cut off time needs to be at least 3 hours before you go to bed.)
Exercise everyday -- take ten minute walks three times a day.
At this age time frame: You are no longer children and need to put away the toys.
Luana suffered from night sweats and lack of a sex drive.
Nothing decreases a sex drive, just heaps of other buried unresolved issues.
It was suggested that Luana take time for herself on a regular basis. (Everyone must do this.)
Dr. Northrup mentioned that the brain is the biggest sex organ and suggested some "clitlit"/romance novels/soft porn (80% of the market are woman buying this stuff).
She said just a little exposure to this can help rekindle some hot romance that has fizzled.
Give up the idea of being perfect because it is stressful.
1. Find normal support.
2. Deal with anger one issue at a time as well as pleasure.
3. Practice self cultivation to make yourself feel good and give you unlimited power.
4. Update yourself/image and practice being kind to yourself.
5. Learn to receive and surrender to pleasure.
Take control of yourself and start to live.

12 Germiest Places
This was on The Today Show and I took notes. They mentioned it was from Health Magazine. I guess that one is at the Doctor's office or hospital, I don't see it on the new stands or library. The list starts at 12 and goes to the #1 germiest place/thing.
12. The Kitchen Sink (disinfect once a day, wash your hands, and put the sponge in the dishwasher when you wash dishes to clean it up.)
11. Airport bathroom (use a towel to touch things, the flush spits germs all over the place so close the lid if there is one when you flush)
10. Laundry (Make sure the water is 150 degrees and don't leave wet laundry hanging around in the washer or wet in a pile making it moldy and germy.)
9. Public drinking fountain (I don't use them.)
8. Shopping cart handles and seats (Seats babies with poopee diapers sit in, also drooling on the bar, bring disinfectant towels and wipe down before use.)
7. ATM (Wipe down with disinfectant towels or use hand sanitizer after using.)
6. Purse (Where do you leave yours? On the poopee seat of the grocery carriage? Wipe down at home with a disinfectant cloth.)
5. Playground equipment (My note: also those ball gyms, MacDonald's or Burger King play lands.)
4. Mats and exercise machines at exercise/health clubs.
3. Bath tub (Mentioned it has more germs than the toilet! Scrub down once a week. Wash your shower curtain.)
2. Office phone and office desk area (Swipe down daily if you can.)
1. The hotel remote control -- you don't have to worry if you don't check in!

Birth Order Traits
I found this article in an old All of You issue (3/2/07 pg 69-70) so here is a synopsis.
The oldest child is a perfectionist, reliable, natural leader, confident, and often a people pleaser (must learn to say no).
The middle child is a peacemaker, creative, makes friends easily, independent, and has entreprenueurial ideas.
The youngest child is a social butterfly, entertaining, charming and an unconventional thinker and very laid back.
Birth order traits don't always hold true.
Here are some issues that can throw off birth order rules:
If a child is 5 years or more younger than the next oldest sibling it is like an another oldest child. (Yes, My two are five years apart so I have two oldest children.)
Gender -- EX: only daughter is the oldest but have younger brothers, the only daughter may act like the youngest child. (I disagree with this, I am the oldest with four younger brothers however, I always felt like an ONLY child not the youngest. Many people thought I was an only child also. Why I don't know.)
Disability or death -- if a sibling is disabled (older or younger) or passes and you are relied on to help, you may take on characteristics of being the oldest child.
What number child are you?

Sleep Better - Six Ways
While waiting in an office, I read an article that gave these tips of getting a sounder night's sleep. Sorry, I did not write down the source.
1. Keep the room comfortably cool -- no higher than 70 degrees temperature in the room.
2. In your dark room hold up a hand, if you can see it, the room is not dark enough.
3. Hide your clock. Don't check the time it will cause you to take two times longer to fall back asleep.
4. Count backwards from 100 to relax. (I have tried this and it works.)
5. Go for an evening walk for at least six blocks. You will fall asleep 33% faster.
6. Enjoy ice cream or any other calcium rich food (a glass of milk) before retiring.
If you have to, get up for 20 minutes, read until you feel sleepy again. Don't turn on bright lights or the TV, computer or listen to loud music.

1907: Facts of Life
The year is 1907. One hundred years ago. Posted below are the Facts of Life for that year.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some of the U.S. Statistics for the Year 1907:
The average life expectancy in the U.S. Was 47 years old.
Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S. , and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California.
With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union .
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour.
The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist made $2,500 per year,
A veterinarian $1,500 per year,
and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. Took place at HOME .
Ninety percent of all U.S. Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month , and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.
Arizona, Oklahoma , New Mexico , Hawaii , and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.
The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every ten U.S. adults couldn't read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, Regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."
There were about 230 reported Murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.!
Email allows you to send messages to you and others all over the United States and possibly the world, in a matter of just seconds!
Just try to imagine... what it may be like in another 100 years!
It staggers the mind!

Magnesium Deficiency
Could it be stealing your energy?
Stressed and tired? If you have two or more of the from the following list, it could mean you have low magnesium levels and you should see a doctor.
Facts: More than 80% of women suffer from a lack of magnesium.
There is less magnisium in the soil where our vegetables grow.
Stress and sweating can flush out the mineral that was ingested.
Headaches/migraines/jaw pain
Brain fog/difficulty concentrating/racing thoughts
Constipation/bloat
Insomnia
High blood sugar
Severe PMS, menstrual cramps or menopausal symptoms
Urinary incontinence/bladder pain
Body-wide muscle and joint aches/restless muscles
Good book to read: The Magnesium Miracle by Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D.
Check your library for a copy.
Source: First Magazine 8/20/07 page 29
Additional info:
"Low levels of magnesium can hasten hardening of the arteries and double the risk of a heart attack." says James C. Roberts MD, co-author "Reverse Heart Attacks Now"
He mentioned that 75% of heart patients had a deficiency and that 400mgs per day in a chewable form is beneficial.

Exercising Techniques
. . . and more!
I got a First Magazine dated August 20th 2007 at the grocery store and was amused by this article about housework as exercise. They covered three surprise fat blaster chores and here is my synopsis of the page 34 article.
1. Putting away dishes tones your arms. To trim and tone faster, double up on the weight of the dishes. (Don't drop them!)
2. Grocery shopping -- 30 minutes burns 200 calories - 30% more than walking on a treadmill the same amount of time. To melt more thigh fat -- when you bend down to the lower shelves, do squats. Nothing was mentioned about the quick spree sprint pushing the carriage.
3. Gardening -- helps trim the tummy. To triple the tummy toning, press your tummy muscles in toward your back/spine and works to help tighten the abdominal muscles. I don't have a garden to do this one.
I seem to get more exercise vacuuming, doing laundry, walking the dogs, walking around this house, laughing, and finger exercise typing. Oh yes, and the very long walk to the mailbox, maybe several times if the mailman has not come on time.
Other things mention worthy were --
Tomatoes (page 25)
Orange tomatoes deliver 200 times more lypopene (proven to ward off cancer, heart disease, and macular degeneration).
Eating a half cup of tomatoes a day can help reduce up to 34% joint soreness.
Eating a cup a day increases brain cell activity to speedy thinking and improve focus, this all due to the 400 mg of potassium.
Eating a cup a day also helps reduce sun related skin damage by 35%.
Eating a tomato a day helps your bones become more resilient because of vitamin K.
My husband planted some tomatoes, but some creature has been eating them.
On pages 28 and 29 another article on being tired and what causes it.
A fact stated was that 80% of women suffer from a lack of magnesium and do not know this.
They have a minute quiz of symptoms to help evaluate your situation.
Maximizing Metabolism is on pages 30-31 and how you can lose 30 lbs by Labor day with the new "water cure", which is 4 weeks away.
Now eat some tomatoes and think about and focus on what I reviewed here.

Vitamin C Factoids
This morning while listening to the radio, the factoid of the day was that people who have more Vitamin C in their system are able to burn off more calories than those who don't when they exercise and they lose weight faster.
So eat plenty of spaghetti sauce, tomato products, citrus fruits, cantaloupe, honeydew melons, strawberries, broccoli, green peppers, and brussel sprouts as well as cabbage.
Orange juice made of frozen concentrate is better for you than the carton or bottle homogenized orange juice.
Vitamin C stays in your system for 12 hours so it is best for you to make sure you intake more through out the day.
Too much Vitamin C can give you a stomach ache or the runs.
I like those little Vitamin C drops you can get by the cough drops at the pharmacy.
Stay healthy -- take your Vitamin C and exercise regularly.

Martini Moms Club
I saw this report last week on the Today Show and was a little surprised.
Basically, the concept is that Moms get together for kiddie playtimes and have cocktails while the little kiddes play.
Today, they re-ran it with feedback from the general public. They said they got lots with both views of pros and cons.
The feedback presented consisted of four emails that they shared then a discussion with a professional psychologist and the Mom in the featured piece who wrote a book.
One email stated that guys watch sports while watching the children and have a beer or two. No one thinks anything of that. Why can't woman have a drink anyways?
Another said anyone can have a drink when they feel like it as long as they don't overdo it and remain focused and responsible for their children.
During the discussion, it was suggested that one parent have a drink, and the other be the designated parent.
One email also stated that the parents shared a beer at dinner, and the author responded with why not have a whole beer instead?
I don't drink, never have.
I don't think it is a good idea for a cocktail hour playdate though for a number of reasons.
First and foremost, how are you suppose to know if a Mom comes to the play date already "primed" before she has a cocktail there because she is a secret closet alchoholic? She drives there, and drives back home with more drink in her.
We have all heard about lawsuits against parents who allow their children to drink at underage graduation parties and then the terrible accidents that happen. Is this not the same scene only with adults who drive small children to playdates?
We have all heard of the lawsuits against dining establishments who served a customer continueously and was quite wired when they left and then had a terrible accident.
I remember my Aunt having a few martinis (daily) before dinner with the neighbor at our summer lakeside cottage. I remember them getting a bit loopy (daily) and when something happened to one of the kids, there was no response or responsibility by her, the adult. The older kids had to be the parent and help.
My Aunt also was not cooking dinner, we all had to fend for ourselves, naturally, again, older kids taking care of the younger ones. I was staying with my Aunt while she was at our cottage but I told my Mom how I did not like this set up (being one of the older kids (my age 11-13) who was cottage bound not running around).
If you are going to be responsible and take care of business properly -- I say, yes, have a drink, but I would do it when the kids are in bed and then relax.

Antiquated Nursing Guidelines
These guidelines were taken from an old nursing book written 111 years ago..
Each nurse was expected to do the following:
l. Daily sweep and mop the floors of your ward, dust the patient's furniture and window sills.
2. Maintain an even temperature in the ward by bringing in a scuttle of coal for the day's business.
3. Light is important to observe the patient's condition.
Therefore, each day, fill kerosene lamps, clean chimneys and trim wicks.
Wash windows once a week.
4. The nurse's notes are important in aiding the physician's work.
Make your pens carefully; you may whittle nibs to your individual taste.
5. Each nurse on day duty will report at 7 a.m. and leave at 8 p.m. except on the Sabbath, on which day you will be off from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
6. Graduate nurses in good standing with the Director or Nurses will be given an evening off each week for courting purposes or two evenings a week if you go regularly to church.
7. Each nurse should lay aside from each pay day a goodly sum of her earnings for the benefits during her declining years so that she will not become a burden to her family. For example, if you earn $30 a month, you should set aside $15.
8. Any nurse who smokes, uses liquor in any form, gets her hair done at a beauty shop or frequents dance halls will give the Director of Nurses good reason to suspect her worth, intentions and integrity.
9. The nurse who performs her labors and serves her patients and doctors without fault for five years, will be given an increase of 5 cents a day, providing there are no hospital debts outstanding."
