Another visit by the Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah 2.14.07, educating us all on our health, mind, body, and soul.
First off, during the show, people were writing in and some liked the fact he wore his scrubs on the show and others wished he would dress more professionally in a suit. What do you think?
Voting ended: Poll/Vote Results: 67% voted Yes and 33% voted No
From his last visit -- let us be reminded -- that the waste we produce equals the kind of health we are in. Make sure you eat veggies, and fibers which are the glue in our intestines. Drink plenty of water to help flush out your system and prevent bad bacteria from growing. Movements should be curved or S shaped one piece and no plopping. If you notice blood or are having loose movements for long periods of time, go to your doctor.
Loose movements can be a sign of stress or IBS: Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
First up was acupuncture -- there are medical and wellness acupuncture treatments.
Medical can clear up digestive problems or allergies.
The needles are very tiny tiny, smaller than a needle you get for a shot. The needles stimulate the nerves to produce endorphins making you feel much better.
A treatment can make you feel better anywhere from 30 minutes after the treatment to a day or two.
They took an audience member at the beginning of the show who had constant shoulder pain and at the end of the hour after a treatment, she said she did feel a difference.
Wellness acupuncture is great just to keep in ship shape if you have the funds to do that.
Just my notes here: I had terrible shoulder pain once and it was called "frozen shoulder". I had to go to physical therapy for it and after months of treatment, I was fine again. Frozen shoulder seems to be a common ailment. It is extremely painful to do anything, sleeping is disturbed.
I have also had shoulder pain from using a shoulder strap pocketbook.
So just a few other ideas to work with.
Dr. Oz mentioned that the new medicine for the future will be "energy medicine".
Actually, my opinion here is that is what some ancient civilizations practiced.
Next up was a women who mentioned that when she laughs she leaks and has to run to the bathroom.
Dr. Oz commended her for asking this question since most people are embarrassed by this.
He said this is common and is a result of weak muscles. This can be a natural condition as we age or a result of pregnancy.
He recommended doing Kegel exercises (exercise guides here: older page with diagrams, or updated page with text only) to strengthen the muscles.
An email question from a women in Russia about douching.
Dr. Oz said that this was not necessary because that area is like a "self cleaning oven" and cleans it self up on a regular basis.
Brazilian Wax tips: yes it is safe to do BUT no double dipping -- meaning, make sure the service is using fresh clean wax.
Botox -- just make sure that you find a professional who knows HOW to inject properly. You do have to have repeat treatments to keep up the appearance.
Bleaching teeth -- one audience member said she bleaches EVERY DAY and that her family and friends were concerned about this habit.
Dr. Oz said every day is overdoing it. Have your teeth bleached at the dentist and then every few weeks do a follow up with a home product.
Cellulite -- Dr. Oz showed a graphic on how cellulite grows and makes dimples. Imagine little cells, you eat fatty and sugar foods, the cells are addicted to that so they plump up and then look like marshmallows -- this is how the cellulite looks under your skin, like a bunch of marshmallows all crowded together.
Can you get rid of cellulite? Yes, temporarily but in the long run, it comes back as some of it is hereditary, in your genes.
He mentioned it is a $3 billion dollar business. Are people wasting their money if there is no real long term remedy?
Varicose veins or spider veins can be removed by simple surgery by lasers or injections. The veins scars are removed and this is permanent.
He mentioned that we all need the sun for vitamin D for 15 to 20 minutes a day.
The best time for safe sun exposure is when you see your shadow long on the ground.
Too much sun causes age spots.
Repeated sun exposure before 20 years old can damage your skin in the long run for life.
Always wear sun screen to protect yourself.
I enjoy Dr. Oz as a guest on Oprah. I think he does a wonderful job of educating the public through her show.
That is it -- keep healthy.
Drink 8 glasses of water a day to "flush out" your system.
