Dr. Oz on Oprah 10.1.07

The Men's Edition

It was an audience of men with Dr. Oz discussing male health issues of concern.

1. Many letters were received about men engaging in sexual relations and they hear a pop and have some pain. A man in the audience related to this story. This is a sign of a broken penis and one must have surgery to correct the matter. The man in the audience said he went to the ER right away and got himself fixed.

2. To circumcise or not to. Forty years ago, this was common and 90% of the male population had this done. Today only 57% have it done. Doctors leave it up to the parents to decide. Some do it as tradition or others for religious reasons.
Good reasons to have it done are that there is less infection, less spread of HIV diseases (used Africa as an example), and easier to keep clean.
Dr. Oz did say that an uncircumcised penis feels more during sex.

3. Erectile Dysfunction - he mentioned that garlic with an antidote of parsley or oysters are natural helpers and if need be, drugs.

4. Vasectomies -- a safe and common procedure. Normal functions stay the same but make sure after the procedure, that you have a sperm count to check to see if the sperm count has dropped.
Someone asked about reversing a vasectomy -- Dr. Oz said it was tricky and not uniformly successful to re-attach.

5. Urination patterns will change after the age of 40 for most men. Dr. Oz showed a bladder with prostate sample and demonstrated how the prostrate enlarges to block the urination path causing frequent runs, or the feeling of feeling full again after you go.
He showed how prostrate cancer cell mass feels, like a hard walnut that also blocks urination.
He said that a simple PSA test is needed to detect prostrate cancer.

6. Testicular cancer is predominate in males 15-35, during the viral years.
He said that men should check themselves regularly starting at age 15 (warm bath) for lumps/nodules, or have a sensitivity to the breasts. Very treatable if found in early stages.
He also asked the men which way their penis hung, and said it hangs/or bends to the left or right depending on which testicle is lower. He showed a picture of how avocados grow to demonstrate what he was talking about.

7. Derek Jeter asked how to cure his lack of sleep.
Dr. Oz recommended that to get to sleep, do not drink caffeinated drinks (coffee) 4 to 5 hours before bedtime.
He also said that watching TV, listening to music, on the computer, or too much light actually jazzes or rev-es you up and then you can't get to sleep.
He said that having milk helps you sleep.
Keep a regular scheduled bedtime hour.

6. Dr. Oz also suggested to eat plenty of bright colored fruits and vegetables to keep antioxidants high in your system to give you energy.

7. Gas -- who has more men or woman? From Dr. Oz's Discovery Health Show -- two ranchers, a man and a women were outfitted with rubber pants and collected their gas for a set time.
The gas was collected into bags that blew up like balloons.
The gas was then released and measured and the man had 3.3 liters of gas while the woman had 3 liters after the set time. Hands down, the man won.
Dr. Oz explained that gas is good for you. It is the bacteria in your body breaking down the waste. Everyone has it, at least 2 pounds of it. There is more bacteria in your body than cells.

8. Hair loss/baldness cures. Dr. Oz said that none of the home remedies work. Hair grows a half inch per month. Most baldness is genetic.
The testosterone DHT is like a poison that kills off hair cells. So losing hair is a chemical issue with what the body is producing.
Propecia and Rogaine are effective drugs that helps maintain hair and is more cost effective than surgery.
Woman don't mind baldness Oprah said.
Men worry about baldness, women about cellulite.

9. Frequency of sex -- most once a week on average but if you have sex four times a week, you could live longer.

10. Preventing wrinkles and dry hands -- Foods with Omega 3's (fatty fish) helps. Dr. Oz recommends getting a facial to exfoliate dead cells and rejuvenate the skill to a glow.

?? He said something really quick and garbled about not washing your face everyday because the oils you produce are the natural moisturizers.
MY NOTE: I know that it is recommended not to wash your hair every day for the same reason. If you wash your hands too much, they get dry and scratchy, so the same happens to your skin. Moisturize with lotion, put lotion on before bedtime.
In the winter, we put lotion on before we put out gloves on and that helps with dry winter hands.

11. Colon Cancer -- a man said he lost his brother age 35 to this. Dr. Oz asked if he has had a colonoscopy and recommended he get one soon.
Increase the fiber in your diet. Most Americans get only 7 grams while they should intake 35 grams a day. Fiber helps flush or push out the toxins and cleans out your system.
He recommended lots of leafy green veggies like broccoli to keep your insides clean.
He also said aspirin helps too.

12. Male menopause -- yes, as your natural chemicals decrease with age, so does your muscle mass, virility, sex drive. Getting plenty of sleep, liquids, and exercise helps restore and rejuvenates your system.

13. Men need to take note of their health and become proactive in it. Taking care of yourself for you and your loved ones is not a sign of weakness. You have the education and knowledge use it to motivate you and act on it.
