Woodchucks

I spied three of them in my backyard and running in the woods, and climbing all the downed trees.
My husband was out there today making smaller logs with his handy yard sale special chainsaw (a $10.00 find).

One was large with interesting markings on his back. Another must have been a year old, and the medium sized one must have been the Mom.

They re-dug their hole under the rock and made a mess. I guess that is their front door.
The backdoor is in the woods 12 or 15 feet away.
They are out around 9 am, and sun themselves on the rock at about 4 pm. A life of luxury.

In addition to the woodchucks we have deer. They love to eat all my lilies.
They do clean up all the thousands of acorns we leave in a pile by the yard's edge.

There is no grass for any animal to eat around here, mostly because we had a problem with the acidic soil due to pine trees, then we tried to fix it only to have grubs eat the entire lawn last year. After another fix (hundreds of dollars later), the entire lawn got washed away from all the heavy rains we had a few weeks ago. All we have is dirt and rocks. A very inviting look, lots of curb appeal.

The skunks would eat the grubs and leave their little "v" holes (from their nose making a funnel in the dirt) everywhere.
The birds would eat grubs too. I would go out and just rake the dirt to expose them and the birds had a picnic. The birds would wait for me with great anticipation at the same time every day.

It would be nice to have a real lawn, I guess that is the next big project.
I hope the woodchucks don't eat it.
