I went to WalMart and bought a scrapbook paper organizer that holds 200 sheets. I hope I do not have more than that or I will not be as organized as I would like to be.It was one of four left, the other three were damaged. They have not restocked the scrapbook aisle since last spring. It is pretty bare.
I feel guilty shopping at WalMart because of the poor wages, unfair treatment, and sometimes discrimination of the workers.Low prices equals low wages and low wages do not buy much, not even health insurance. In the end, these wages and lack of health insurance for workers costs taxpayers dollars in welfare and insurance costs since we all must pay what others cannot pay.China is a country benefitting by WalMart since they produce cheaply most of the wares that are exported back to the USA. Someday, China will want MORE from WalMart and all the prices will go up and we will have to pay China but not the WalMart workers.
In my area, there are no more regular department store, just WalMart.
WalMart blew them off the map. I was more upset when WalMart put Rubbermaid out of business several years ago.
Rubbermaid did not want to sell volume to WalMart but since WalMart was putting out all the little businesses that carried Rubbermaid products, it had to negotiate with WalMart to keep their product out there. When production costs increased for Rubbermaid, they relayed that to WalMart but WalMart refused to raise the retail price of Rubbermaid products and expected Rubbermaid to absorb the price and still sell cheap to them. So they got the boot. Because Rubbermaid's majority buyer was WalMart, it just put them out to pasture because they could not meet their business expenses and sell cheap product to WalMart at the same time.
This past year on Frontline, WalMart issues were highlighted in a special presentation. You can read the show synopsis and see comments other people have made by going to PBS and looking up Frontline.
Another good site with lots of WalMart information, as well as other consumer/busimess infomation is Oligopoly. Scroll down the right hand index and find WalMart.
I never got to see that small film that was being shown locally about the impact of WalMart and the problems it brings to an area.
I am going to go organize my paper today.
